Under Muscle Breast Implants

Breast argumentation is a popular enhancement surgery for women looking to enhance the size and shape of their breasts. During an augmentation procedure, patients are faced with deciding whether to have the implants placed over or under the chest muscle. This article explores the procedure, advantages and considerations of under muscle breast implants.

Under Muscle Breast Implants

What are Breast Implants under the Muscle?

Under muscle breast implants are also known as submuscular breast implants. Through a method that involves creating a pocket in the muscle tissue to hold the implant, under the muscle breast implants are inserted underneath the pectoral muscle. Submuscular breast implants are popular, particularly among women with small breasts or thin chest walls.

Benefits of Under Muscle Breast Implants

Besides enhancing the shape and size of the breasts, under the muscle breast implants have clear benefits:

1. Natural Appearance

Submuscular breast implants are popular because they create a more natural-looking breast contour as compared to the subglandular implants that go over the muscle. The pectoral muscle provides additional coverage, making the implant less visible and palpable.

2. Reduced Risk of Capsular Contracture

Capsular Contracture occurs when scar tissue forms around the breast implant. The result is a hardened and deformed contour. Placing the implant under the muscle allows the muscle tissue to provide a barrier between the implant and the surrounding tissue.

3. Low Risk of Breast Rippling

When the implants are placed in the subglandular position, they offer more soft tissue coverage; conceals the implant much better and reduces the chances of breast implant rippling.

4. More Protection

Over muscle implants offers more protection from implant exposure if there is loss of skin or delayed healing.

5. Easier Mammograms

Another advantage is that radiologists can perform mammograms more easily and detect abnormalities in breast tissue because the muscle tissue helps compress the breast tissue.

Considerations for Breast Implant Under Muscle vs Over Muscle

Are breast implants better over or under the muscle?

Below are things to consider when getting breast implants under the muscle rather than over:

1. Longer Recovery Time

Breast implant under the muscle recovery takes longer. You may experience more discomfort and stiffness because the muscle stretches during surgery. In perspective, an extended recovery period is a small price to pay for the results.

2. Chronic Pain

Some patients experience chronic pain and muscle weakness in the chest and arms from under the muscle implants.

3. Limited Physical Activity

When you get under muscle breast implants, you may need to limit certain physical activities. Taking some time before lifting weights with breast implants under the muscle will be important. You will have to lay off working your chest muscles with heavy weights or push-ups. These exercises can cause the implant to shift.

4. Movement

Some movement (aka: animation) within the over muscle implant may happen from muscle contractions. And activating the chest muscle could cause an implant to shift. However, it is nothing to be concerned about. It will not endanger your health or become a problem.

5. Higher Cost

Under muscle breast implant procedure is a more complex surgery that requires more time in the operating room. Consequently, under muscle breast implant surgeries are more expensive than over muscle breast implant surgeries. Nonetheless, there are some wonderful and convenient options available for financing plastic surgery procedures.

Breast Implant Under Muscle Reconstruction

For many years, the choice for surgeons has been using the under muscle implant procedure for breast cancer patients. One of the most common is breast implants under muscle after double mastectomy. However, many patients have experienced chronic pain and muscle weakness in the chest and arms. Some have also complained about disturbing contractions resulting in strange movements within the chest.

What to Know About Recovery from Breast Augmentation with Fat Transfer

What to Know About Recovery from Breast Augmentation with Fat Transfer

If you desire to reshape your breasts, a breast augmentation with a fat transfer can be an ideal way to boost your appearance. The recovery period can be minimal to other breast augmentation procedures. This is because the incisions made are smaller in comparison. Below is what you need to know about the recovery period from breast augmentation with a fat transfer.

First Weeks After Breast Augmentation with Fat Transfer

The outpatient procedure for a breast augmentation with a fat transfer is done using a general anesthesia. While you may experience some soreness and bruising, you may be able to resume moderate activities within a couple days of recovery after the procedure. Work may be resumed after a week, depending on the level of activity. Avoid doing any strenuous activity, such as sports participation or heavy lifting. You can use over-the-counter pain medications to help reduce any pain or discomfort.

6 Months After Breast Augmentation with a Fat Transfer

Within approximately three to six months after a breast augmentation with a fat transfer recovery, most of the swelling should be gone. Your breasts may now feel normal with firmness and comfort level. The final evaluation for the fat transfer result may be done by the surgeon at this time.

One Year After Breast Augmentation with a Fat Transfer

A year after your breast augmentation with a fat transfer recovery, your breasts should be in their final shape. Because the cells from the fat transfer are fully integrated, the results are permanent with no need for additional fat transfers. Your breasts may still change shape over time as you age. A healthy diet and regular exercise can help you maintain your results.

3 Reasons to Consider a Breast Fat Transfer

3 Reasons to Consider a Breast Fat Transfer

breast fat transfer with Dr. MendietaIf you are unhappy with the size of your breasts, you may be considering plastic surgery to improve the way they look. You may be aware of implants that can be inserted to change the shape or volume of your breasts. There is an alternative treatment option that can give you natural-looking results.

3 Reasons to Consider a Breast Fat Transfer to Enhance Your Appearance

Augment Small Breasts

A breast fat transfer is an ideal solution for women who desire to make a slight change in the shape or size of their breasts. If one breast is slightly bigger than the other, this procedure can help correct the imbalance. With implants, cosmetic flaws can occur with women who have little natural tissue to provide cover. A breast fat transfer can be done with breast implants to minimize the appearance of wrinkling, rippling or visible implant edges.

Reduce Risks of Complications

Implants can shift, collapse or rupture. If this happens, it can create serious effects to your health and well-being and become expensive to correct. If you are concerned with putting foreign substances in your body, you may want to consider a breast fat transfer. This procedure uses your own body fat to reduce the risks of complications while still providing natural results.

Reduce Unwanted Body Fat in Other Areas

During a breast fat transfer, body fat is taken from a person’s stomach, thighs or hips. Once the fat is purified, it is then injected into the targeted area of the breasts. While only a small amount of fat is removed, it can help bring greater definition to your overall silhouette.

Is Breast Augmentation Surgery Permanent?

Is Breast Augmentation Surgery Permanent?

How Long Does Breast Augmentation Last?

One of the most common questions asked by women who want breast implants is, “How long does a breast augmentation last?

breast augmentation surgery in miamiBreast implants can be a positive solution for women who experience dissatisfaction with their naturally small breasts. This is also a solution for women who feel that age, weight, and childbearing has negatively affected the shape and size of their breasts.

Breast augmentation can encourage and empower a woman’s self-image for years, making satisfaction rates very high. While there has never been a specific shelf life given for breast implants, they are typically expected to last at least 10 to 15 years. The longevity of breast implants can change due to physiological responses, such as capsule contracture, or failure with an implant itself.

Alternatively, some women experience no issues with their implants after 20 years. So, there is no real need to have their breast implants revised or replacedStill, breast implant devices are not designed to last a lifetime. Below are a few reasons why breast implant replacement or breast revision may be right for you.

What Reasons Might Cause Me to Need a Breast Revision?

Capsular Contracture

Different concerns may arise that would prompt a breast revision. As time transpires, implants age and become more fragile; causing an increased likelihood of failure. There are sometimes problems with infection, rippling and rupturing. The body’s immune system may also have a negative response to the breast implant. It is natural for a layer of scar tissue to form around the implant (just as it would any foreign object in the body). What’s not natural is the tightening and constructing of that scar tissue around that implant. This is known as capsular contracture; and it results in the tightening or hardening of the breast implant.

Implant Rupture

Realistically, the risk of rupture is relatively low within the first 10 years of getting a breast implant. However, as time progresses, the shell that makes up the silicone or saline implant becomes fragile. Ruptures occur when the shell fails to be malleable; allowing the implant’s inner contents to escape from the silicone shell.

New implants are strong enough to withstand the pressure of daily activities.

What Are My Breast Revision Options?

Much like the personalized nature of the breast augmentation process, breast revisions are uniquely designed according to each patient’s needs.

Breast revision options include:

    • Breast Implant removal and exchange: Performed when an implant ruptures, this technique allows you to adjust the size, type, and shape. The damaged or unwanted implant is removed. And a new, healthy implant is replaced during the same procedure
    • Breast Implant removal: Permanent implant removal without replacement eliminates the unwanted or damaged implant before the breast pocket is tightened. This technique is sometimes performed alongside breast lift surgery to elevate sagging breasts.
    • Breast Implant placement: This technique is performed when there is dissatisfaction with the implant location (below the muscle vs. over the muscle). The implant is removed and repositioned to the desired area.
    • Breast Capsulectomy: In response to capsular contracture or other implant complications, capsulectomy removes the thickened capsule to improve the appearance of the breasts.
    • En bloc capsulectomy: En bloc capsulectomy is a form of capsulectomy that removes the implant and the surrounding capsule in one piece. This is particularly important when the implant has ruptured.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is an enhancement procedure that focuses on adding volume and shape to the breasts through implants.

Breast augmentation can:

  • Add volume to naturally small or deflated breasts
  • Alter and readjust the shape and position of asymmetrical breasts
  • Boost self-esteem and confidence

What Kinds of Breast Augmentation Procedures Are There?

1. Breast Augmentation With Implants

Breast augmentation with implants is an individualized outpatient procedure. An incision is made and an implant inserted into the breast.

There are two important factors that help to achieve a patient’s personal preferences and goals: incision location and implant placement.

Incision Location

  • Inframammary: along the crease under the breast
  • Periareolar: around the edges of the areolas
  • Transaxillary: within the armpit
  • Transumbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA): within the navel

Implant Placement

  • Submuscular: Implants are placed under the pectoral muscles, thus concealing the edge of the implants. This is the best option for patients with minimal breast tissue
  • Subglandular: Implants are placed above the muscle and under the glandular tissue. This option requires a shorter recovery period and caters to patients with moderate breast tissue.

Breast augmentation with implants is the more traditional procedure for an augmentation. However, if you would like a breast augmentation without implants, the next option might be more suited to your needs.

2. Breast Fat Transfer

Breast fat transfer allows you to use your own body fat to increase the volume and alter the shape of your breasts. This procedure utilizes liposuction to remove excess fat from one part of the body and inject it into the breasts.

Using your own fat for breast augmentation serves the dual purpose of reducing excess fat stores in other parts of your body. This method is ideal for patients who would like a fairly moderate increase in breast size and want the most natural-looking breast augmentation.

3. Breast Lift

Rather than adding volume to the breasts, the primary focus of a breast lift is to create the appearance of a perkier, more youthful breast shape.

 breast lift patient 13

This method repositions existing tissue and removes sagging or otherwise, unappealing skin to sculpt the breast in the patient’s ideal shape.

In order to achieve the desired results, there are three techniques for a breast lift:

  • Periareolar Technique: This technique is best for patients with minimal breast sagging. Two circumferential incisions are made around the areolas. Through these incisions, excess skin is removed and the size of the areola can be reduced.
  • Lollipop Technique: This technique is better suited for patients that have moderate breast sagging. One incision is made around the areolas, and another runs vertically down the breast to the inframammary fold. Then, the breast tissue is repositioned, excess skin removed and the areolas reduced according to the needs of the patient.
  • Anchor Technique: This is the most extensive of the three procedure options but is ideal for patients that live with severe breast sagging. One incision is made around the areolas and another vertically down the breast towards the inframammary fold. One last incision is made horizontally along the breast crease. This allows for more excess skin removal.

Which Breast Augmentation Is Best?

The goals of each patient are different.

Which breast augmentation option is best for you will depend on several factors:

  • The level of size increase one wishes to achieve
  • Are you changing the shape, adding volume, or both?
  • How invasive of a procedure are you willing to undergo?
  • Are there special medical needs that you have to consider?

It is important to do your research when considering a breast augmentation procedure. Ultimately, communicating your needs and goals with your surgeon is the best way to come to the decision that is best for you.

Do I Need a Breast Lift or a Breast Augmentation?

Do I Need a Breast Lift or a Breast Augmentation?

What is Better Breast Lift or Augmentation Surgery?

breast lift surgery miamiThe breasts are the most common part of the body that women wish to improve with cosmetic surgery. Breast procedures are performed more than any other cosmetic procedure in the world; and continue to gain popularity.

Many women are unhappy with the size, position, and saggy appearance of their breasts. Therefore, they look for ways to correct these issues.

You may have already decided to undergo cosmetic surgery to enhance your breasts. However, determining whether you need a breast lift, or a breast augmentation, to get the results you desire can be confusing. A consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon in Miami will help guide you to determining the best procedure for you based on your own specific needs.

What is a Breast Lift?

Breast lift surgery (medically known as mastopexy) is a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure used to raise and restore shape to the breasts. Breast sagging may occur for various reasons, such as aging, gravity, weight loss, or nursing.

During a breast lift procedure, the breasts are reshaped and made more firm by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue.

The nipple and areola are often repositioned to create a more youthful appearance. Ideal candidates for breast lift surgery have moderate to severe drooping (or sagging) with nipples positioned at the bottom of the breasts or pointing downward. Recovery from a breast lift consists of one to two weeks of downtime; and depends on the patient’s ability to heal.

What is a Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation (medically known as augmentation mammoplasty) achieves breast enlargement. This type of breast enhancement adds breast volume with implants made of saline or silicone gel. They are placed under or over the pectoral muscles. The shape of the augmented breasts is determined by the implant type and the patient’s anatomy.

During a consultation with a plastic surgeon, desired breast size, width, curves, and cleavage will all be discussed. Ideal candidates for a breast augmentation alone desire to increase the size of their breasts (at least one cup size). And they do not have significant breast sagging. After breast augmentation, physical activity should be minimized for the first three to seven days. Heavy lifting should be avoided for six weeks. Recovery time is largely dependent on the placement of the incisions and the implants.

When to Combine Procedures?

Advantages of Combined Breast Lift with Augmentation

In many cases, patients need a combination of breast lift and breast augmentation surgery to obtain their desired results. Ideal candidates, for having both procedures, want to increase their breast size and also reduce sagging. Recovery time can range from one to two weeks, and general healing will continue for six weeks. Recovery varies depending on the individual patient and the extent of the procedures performed.
