When it comes to your appearance, you can’t trust just anyone to make sure you look your best. For big occasions, women often turn to professional artists and stylists for their hair and makeup; and they have alterations specialists to make sure their dresses fit perfectly.
Men also usually visit a tailor to ensure their suits fit just right. So when it comes to something as significant as your body and health, wouldn’t you want to make sure you have the same kind of experienced professional making any life-changing alterations (to achieve the best results) that will be personalized for you?
Why It’s Important to Choose Board Certified Plastic Surgeons
Many practitioners perform cosmetic surgery, but not all are specifically trained in plastic surgery. Legally, with the consent of the patient, any licensed physician with a valid doctor of medicine degree can perform cosmetic procedures. This means that a physician may not have training or experience in the cosmetic procedure they are performing.*
Doctors can receive formal training in any specialty, such as dermatology, pediatrics, or general surgery, and call themselves cosmetic surgeons. Specific training and experience in plastic surgery are necessary to evaluate the individual needs of a patient; deal with any potential complications; and ensure patient safety to achieve the best results.* Just as you wouldn’t trust an inexperienced stylist to change your appearance, don’t trust an inexperienced doctor to do a plastic surgeon’s job.
To guarantee that you are undergoing a cosmetic procedure with an experienced, first-rate physician, ask your surgeon to show you proof of the following qualifications:*
Certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS)
A surgeon who is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) has completed at least five years of approved surgical training and a residency in plastic surgery. If a physician claims to be “board certified,” make sure you check that they are board certified by The ABPS, as this is the only board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) to certify physicians for plastic surgery procedures.
Member of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS)
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) is the leading organization of plastic surgeons who specialize in cosmetic surgery. Membership in The ASAPS is by invitation only, and members must be certified by The ABPS.
Member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is the largest plastic surgery specialty organization in the world, and its members must perform their surgeries in accredited surgical facilities. Choosing a surgeon who operates in an accredited facility will ensure that they have the proper equipment and staff to monitor your safety.*
Experience Performing the Procedure You Desire
Even if a surgeon has the previous qualifications, he or she should also have extensive experience performing the specific procedure you wish to undergo. If they have a lot of experience and specialize in the procedure you desire, they will be more likely to know a variety of current techniques.* This will allow them to tailor the procedure to meet your individual needs and provide you with the best results possible.*
A surgeon with these qualifications will achieve superior results because they will have the ability to evaluate your features and circumstances to choose the best course of action for your procedure.* An experienced hairstylist is the best person to evaluate your facial structure and hair type to recommend the best options for a new “do.” In the same way, an experienced plastic surgeon is the best person to evaluate your body type to provide the best results.*

Butt enhancement surgery can be performed to achieve a rounder, voluminous buttocks with a more attractive contour.* There are a couple of different techniques that can be used for the surgery. Patients have the option of butt augmentation with fat transfer; or butt augmentation with implants.
Liposuction and Butt Fat Transfer
The fat transfer lipo method (aka: “autologous fat grafting”) involves removing fat from one area of the patient’s body via liposuction; and then injecting it into the buttocks. However, patients without enough excess fat to be used for grafting will need silicone butt implants to achieve the more voluptuous derriere they desire.*
Once the method of butt augmentation has been decided, I will also give my patients the option of further contouring their buttocks; and surrounding areas with liposuction. Liposuction can be combined with butt augmentation surgery for a more comprehensive enhancement of the patient’s posterior.
The Mendieta Technique
When I was studying under the doctors who developed the Brazilian Butt Lift technique, they did not offer liposuction on areas of the butt to further contour it. Rather, they just took fat from other areas of the body and used it to augment the buttocks. I realized that if certain areas of the buttocks and legs also had liposuction (which could also be combined with the butt implant method), it would further enhance the overall appearance of the patient’s backside.*
A more shapely rear can be achieved by removing excess fat from above, below, or on the sides of the buttocks.*
Patients that have a flat backside (with excess fat in the upper outside part of the buttocks) can benefit from liposuction. This will help to improve the wide appearance of their behind. And will also draw more attention to the round projection of their resulting rear-end; and a more attractive shape.*
Some patients who desire more volume in the buttocks have excess fat in the inner and outer thighs. This detracts from the aesthetics of their posterior. Liposuction in these areas can provide more slender legs that lead up to their newly shaped backside.*
If there is a droopy appearance from excess fat in the lower butt or upper outer thighs, liposuction can be performed in these areas (concurrently with the butt augmentation procedure). This is done in order to correct the “dirty diaper look” and procure a more lifted appearance.*
While it is very important to follow your doctor’s instructions prior to, and on the day of, surgery, patients should be aware that carefully adhering to your doctor’s postoperative instructions are just as important for achieving favorable results.* This is especially true with butt lift surgery. As your surgeon, I will give you specific instructions regarding your at-home care.
Below is some general information on what you can expect during your recovery period after butt lift surgery.*
Rest*
Although it is beneficial for patients to walk as soon as possible (to reduce swelling and the chance of developing blood clots), patients can expect to be away from work and social activities for two weeks. They should avoid strenuous activities during the first four weeks after surgery.* Applying direct pressure to the buttocks should be avoided for two months.
In the meantime, you may sit using a special technique by which you use a soft cushion that you place behind the leg. This will hoist the buttock, preventing any pressure from being applied.* You should also sleep on your stomach for two months.
Healthy Diet*
Eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water is good for everyone. But it is especially important for the healing body.* After surgery, patients will likely be taking pain medication and activity levels will be decreased; which can cause constipation.* Consuming a high fiber diet with fresh fruits and vegetables (as well as increasing fluid intake) will help alleviate this discomfort.*
Patients should eat healthy protein in order to repair the body’s damaged tissues.* An anti-inflammatory diet with foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (i.e. fruits, vegetables, and herbs and spices) will give the body the nutrition it needs to heal properly and stay healthy.*
How to Care for the Treated Areas*
Butt lift surgery patients may shower 48 hours following surgery. However, the dressings will not be removed from the treated areas until approximately one week postoperatively.* Patients should leave the dressings in place and wash around them when showering during this time.
After the dressings are removed, it is important keep the treated areas clean and cover them with gauze and bandages after showering. Except when showering, a compression garment should be worn constantly for at least four to six weeks to reduce swelling and support the treated areas as they heal.*
What to Avoid
Patients should abstain from alcohol during the recovery period; especially while taking pain medications. Patients should refrain from smoking for at least two weeks following surgery; as it impairs healing and also increases the risk for complications.* It is also advised that patients avoid exposing any scars to sunlight for about 12 months. If sun exposure cannot be prevented, a sunblock of SPF 30 or greater should be applied.

When walking under the sun next to the blue water of Miami, Florida’s gorgeous beaches, you always want to look your best, and a shapely backside is perhaps the most important aspect of looking attractive in a bikini.* However, not all women have a naturally curvaceous derriere and neither workout videos nor specialized exercise routines can always give them the results they desire. In the past, traditional methods of butt enhancement required significant scarring that often left patients with less than satisfactory results.*
This is why the Brazilian Butt Lift (aka: BBL Surgery) procedure has become so popular, not just in South Florida, but all over the world. As a board certified plastic surgeon that specializes in butt enhancement procedures, I have been on the forefront of the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure. In fact, I am the author of a book titled The Art of Gluteal Sculpting, which is only one of two books in the world concerning gluteal sculpting procedures.
What’s a Brazilian Butt Lift?
A Brazilian Butt Lift begins by removing excess fat from an area (or areas) of the body, such as the thighs, abdomen, or back, via liposuction. The harvested fat is then injected into specific areas of the buttocks where the butt is sculpted to a more attractive contour and lifted to a higher position.*
The 4 Most Common Reasons Why More Women are Choosing the BBL Procedure:
Restore Youth* – As the aging process takes place, the buttocks begin to lose shape and volume, resulting in sagging skin and a hanging butt. When all these factors are apparent, a woman’s buttocks become an eye-catching experience for all the wrong reasons. A Brazilian Butt Lift restores a youthful contour to a woman’s backside by reversing the effects of aging and providing a more attractive rear end.*
Improve the Effects of Malformation* – Natural deformities and traumatic events, such as car accidents that have caused injury to the butt, have encouraged many patients to undergo a Brazilian Butt Lift to improve the appearance of their buttocks.*
Look Better in Clothing* – Appearing attractive when wearing a bathing suit is not the only reason why women undergo a Brazilian Butt Lift procedure. Often, patients choose to improve the fullness and shape of their buttocks to look better in other forms of clothing, such as jeans, sweats, and shorts.*
Improve Self-Esteem* – Some individuals choose a Brazilian Butt Lift for their own personal benefit to help them feel better about themselves. Although there may be no physical problems with their buttocks, they may simply wish to improve the volume, shape, or position of their butt.*

Choosing a board-certified and experienced plastic surgeon, as well as being informed about the procedure, is a very important aspect of any successful surgery.* However, there are also certain things that patients can do on their own before surgery to prepare their bodies and minds to achieve the best results. As your surgeon, I will give you specific instructions regarding preoperative care for the Brazilian Butt Lift.
Here are some things to consider before Brazilian Butt Lift surgery and, perhaps, even before your initial consultation:*
Healthy Diet*
To increase the chances of a safe and effective procedure, it is necessary for highly overweight patients to achieve a stable and healthy weight before surgery is scheduled.* Potential patients can start their path to a more appropriate weight by eating a healthy diet.*
Those who have already been cleared for surgery should consume healthy foods and plenty of water for at least a few weeks prior to surgery. This is in order to regulate the digestive system and guard the body against infection and disease.*
A diet consisting of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, high-quality proteins (such as fish, poultry, eggs, and nuts), and herbs and spices will give the body the vitality needed for surgery. During this time, patients should avoid eating large amounts of dairy products, sweets, and processed foods.* A lighter diet emphasizing liquids, fruits, and vegetables is also suggested for the days leading up to surgery to ease digestion.
Practice Relaxation Techniques*
Surgery can cause anxiety and distress in some patients, which can negatively affect many aspects of surgery.* Therefore, it is a good idea for all patients to practice relaxation techniques prior to surgery. This method has been shown to speed up the healing process; shorten hospital stays; and reduce anxiety, complications, and postoperative pain and discomfort.* Possible relaxation techniques include yoga, breathing exercises, and meditation.
Stock up on Supplies*
To allow the most amount of time for rest and relaxation after surgery, it is advised that patients plan ahead. Gather the necessary postoperative supplies before the day of their procedure. These may include: a donut for sitting on (to avoid applying direct pressure to the buttocks); a reacher for picking up things out of reach; antibacterial soap; healthy foods and drinks; bandages, loose clothing, stool softeners, and ice packs.
What to Avoid*
As with all surgeries, it is extremely important to avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, herbal supplements, alcohol, and smoking for at least two weeks prior to surgery.* These can interfere with your blood’s ability to clot and your body’s ability to heal.*

Request Exparel before Your Procedure to Reduce Pain up to 80%
People from all over the world who desire butt augmentation ask me about the popular procedure known as the Brazilian Butt Lift. A lot of my patients choose this procedure because it is really two great procedures in one: liposuction and butt augmentation. A Brazilian Butt Lift involves removing unwanted fat from problem areas, such as the hips, thighs, and “love handles,” to correct a boxy, flat shape or to simply add volume to the buttock area.* Once removed, the fat is purified and then re-injected into the buttocks.
Brazilian Butt Lift vs Implants
This procedure is not as invasive as buttock implant surgery and can often provide a more contoured look without noticeable scars.* A main advantage with the Brazilian Butt Lift is that the technique can be adjusted to meet the patient’s needs, whether they desire a subtle change or more dramatic results.*
Unfortunately, not everyone is a candidate for Brazilian Butt Lift surgery. Because only the best donor fat cells are re-injected back into the buttocks for augmentation, fat often has to be suctioned from more than one area of the body in order to get enough fat to re-inject into the buttocks.* Approximately 6 to 8 pounds of fat is removed from the body and about 1 to 2 pounds is reinjected into the buttocks. Therefore, if the patient has a petite frame with an inadequate amount of fat in the stomach and flank areas, the procedure cannot be performed successfully.*
Who are the Best Candidates for Brazilian Butt Lifts?
Good candidates for the Brazilian Butt Lift include both men and women who are a bit overweight or have the pounds to spare. When patients do not have enough fat and they do not want to consider buttock implants, I send them to “booty camp,” where they can eat whatever they want in order to gain enough weight for surgery. Once the patient has gained enough weight, I can liposuction the new fat and put it in its rightful place.*
