Body Lift Plastic Surgery

Aging, pregnancy, genetics, and substantial weight loss can produce pronounced and overhanging folds of skin throughout the lower body. Having a considerable amount of excess skin can cause physical discomfort and make it difficult to wear form-fitting clothing with confidence. While traditional at-home fitness methods may help firm and tone the underlying musculature, significant skin laxity can only be corrected with a body contouring procedure.

Body lift surgery involves removing overlapping folds of skin from around the abdomen. This procedure tightens the lower midsection and creates stunning definition that complements the figure. By performing body lift surgery, Dr. Mendieta can restore your silhouette to a gorgeous shape and eliminate the burden of carrying bothersome, excess skin.

How is a Body Lift Performed?

Body lift surgery can revamp and enhance the appearance of the abdominal area, thighs, and buttocks. The inner, outer, posterior, or the circumference of the thigh may be altered during this type of enhancement.

Body lift surgery is performed using general anesthesia and may last between four and six hours from start to finish. This procedure involves reshaping and restoring the physique to a firmer and more appealing condition with skin excision as well as other restorative techniques.

First, a circumferential incision is created around the midsection, and an apron of excess tissue is carefully removed. Dr. Mendieta then lifts the buttocks and thighs to produce a smoother and more youthful appearance.

A tummy tuck may be performed to improve the front of the body and repair the rectus muscles for a corseted effect. Patients with remaining fat deposits may achieve optimal results from adding liposuction to their body lift procedure. Dr. Mendieta will determine the most efficient approach to your body lift procedure after evaluating your individual goals and needs during your consultation.

What is My Body Lift Recovery Like?

Patients may experience bruising, swelling, and discomfort following their body lift procedure. Dr. Mendieta will prescribe pain medication to manage postoperative discomfort. He also suggests to his patients to consider adding Exparel injections for pain. Exparel must be administered during the procedure and will be an additional cost, but will reduce pain by up to 80%.

Bandages and the necessary compression garments will be applied to help reduce the risk of these side effects. Usually, drains are inserted to prevent fluid accumulation during recovery. Most patients can resume working two weeks after surgery, but they must refrain from any strenuous activity for a minimum of six weeks.

When Can I Exercise After a Body Lift?

About four to six weeks into recovery you may take short, light walks. Vigorous exercise and heavy lifting must be avoided for eight weeks. Depending on what your custom surgical plan entails, you will be provided with detailed aftercare instructions that specify what your physical limitations are.

FAQ

  • How much does body lift surgery cost?

The cost of a body lift procedure depends on the extent of correction required, the treatment areas, the surgical techniques used, and facility fees. You will be given a cost estimate that reflects your unique surgical plan during your consultation. And there are financing options for plastic surgery available.

  • Is a body lift covered by insurance?

Some insurance providers will cover a portion of the surgery in the case of extreme weight loss. Ultimately, your coverage will depend on your insurance provider and your plan.

It is recommended that you reach out to your provider directly for more information as most plastic surgery procedures are considered elective (thereby preventing insurance coverage).

  • When should I book a consultation?

Your consultation will typically only take 30 to 45 minutes. After deciding to go through with the procedure, you will likely be able to book your surgery for just a few weeks out from your initial consultation. If you are eager for immediate surgery, you should book a consultation now.

  • Is an overnight stay necessary?

While this can be an outpatient procedure, it may be recommended that you spend one night at the facility after your operation.

  • Is there a non-surgical option for a body lift?

Unfortunately, if you have extremely loose skin following extreme weight loss, only a surgical procedure can remove that excess skin. However, post-surgery, you can maintain skin tightness and tone with non-surgical body contouring procedures.

  • Are some people not able to get a body lift?

Your doctor will review your candidacy during your initial consultation. If you have poor health or are unable to give up smoking, drinking, or certain medications before and after the procedure, a body lift may not be the right choice for you.

  • Can I combine other "lifts" with my body lift (i.e., face, breast, arms, buttocks, thighs, etc.)?

A body lift can be combined with other surgeries, such as breast lift surgery, Brazilian Butt Lift surgery, or tummy tuck surgery. Most commonly, the body lift is done in conjunction with liposuction. Generally, it is not recommended to combine cosmetic surgeries that focus on different parts of the body, making recovery more difficult.

To fully understand what combinations work, book a consultation at our Miami center for plastic surgery to discuss your goals.

  • Is it safe to undergo a body lift procedure?

Yes. Body lift surgery is very safe. Like any surgery, there are some possible risks after a body lift procedure.

Schedule a consultation with your plastic surgeon to discuss your specific risks. Your surgeon will review your medical history and current health to confirm that you are a viable and safe candidate for the procedure.

  • What are the risks associated with body lift surgery?

While it is uncommon to experience severe complications after body lift surgery, some of the risks associated with the procedure include:

    • Prolonged bleeding
    • Infection
    • Changes in sensation
    • Scarring
    • Abnormal reaction to anesthesia
  • Will I have visible scarring after my body lift procedure?

You can expect to have some scarring after body lift surgery. However, Dr. Mendieta meticulously places all incisions in discrete locations so they can be concealed with clothing and undergarments. All scars tend to fade over time, and most body lift patients feel that the benefits of the procedure outweigh the risk of developing scars.

  • When will I see the final results of my body lift procedure?

You will notice an immediate improvement following your body lift surgery. In the months after your procedure, as swelling dissipates and your body begins to adjust to its new physique, your results will continue to improve.

  • How long will my body lift results last?

The outcome of body lift surgery is considered permanent. This procedure does not, however, prevent the effects of subsequent aging or weight gain, so maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle is crucial for preserving your results.
