What is a Thigh Lift?

The thighs can be a troublesome area for many people, with excess skin or fat impacting the shape of the upper legs. Weight gain and loss, pregnancy, aging, genetics and other factors can impact the skin and tissue on the thighs; which cannot be tightened or reshaped with diet and exercise alone.

Massive weight loss especially can impact the appearance of the thighs, resulting in sagging skin. A thigh lift (aka: Thighplasty) is a body contouring procedure that removes excess skin and fat to tighten and reshape the upper legs for a more attractive appearance.

Dr. Mendieta at 4Beauty Aesthetic Institute for Plastic Surgery is one of the top plastic surgeons in Miami, Florida, offering thighplasty to create firm, well-shaped thighs for our patients.

Am I a Good Candidate for Thighplasty?

Anyone who has loose or sagging skin or tissue on their thighs may be a good candidate for a thigh lift. If you hide your legs with long shorts or skirts due to embarrassment about your thighs (even in the hot Miami weather) a thigh lift may be the solution.

Dr. Mendieta helps those with jiggly inner thighs or sagging skin and tissue on the front or outside of the thighs. As with all plastic surgery, you should be in good health and quit smoking or using anti-inflammatory medications at least two weeks before surgery.

How is a Thigh Lift Done?

There are two main types of thigh lift procedures: medial and standard thigh lift. The medial thigh lift addresses only the inner thigh near the pubic area. A portion of the skin and tissue on the inner thigh is removed, and then tightened and contoured, to create a firmer, slimmer inner thigh.

The standard thigh lift may include an incision near where the thigh meets the pubic area near the crease to remove excess skin and fat; then tighten and reshape the thigh. But there are many different variations of the thigh lift. And each procedure can be performed differently (depending on the patient and thigh areas that need to be addressed).

Thigh lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia and is an outpatient procedure. Most thigh lift surgeries can be performed in about two hours. We recommend requesting Exparel to be added to your surgery to help reduce pain during and after your procedure. Dr. Mendieta may include liposuction, skin removal, skin tightening and muscle/tissue reshaping during the thigh lift to create the desired results.

How Long is Recovery after Thigh Lift?

You will need a friend or family member to take you home after your surgery. Your surgical area will be covered with bandages. And you may be required to wear a compression garment to help reduce swelling; and aid in keeping the skin and tissue in place while it heals. Some patients may require a drain to allow blood or fluids to be released from the wound site. Most patients will need up to two weeks off from work or normal activities to recover.

After surgery, there will be some bruising and swelling that will remain for up to four weeks. While some improvement to the shape of the thighs is immediate, the results will improve as swelling dissipates and the tissue heals in the following months. Most patients can exercise and return to all normal activities in 4-6 weeks after surgery.

Thigh Lift FAQs

  • Will a thigh lift get rid of saggy skin on the thighs?

Yes! A thigh lift is the only permanent way to remove excess skin. Dr. Mendieta will remove some of the loose skin and tighten it to create a firmer, more toned appearance.

  • Will liposuction be performed?

Most thigh lift surgeries are to remove excess skin and to tighten or contour the shape of the leg. However, some patients may also need liposuction to remove pockets of fat that are impacting the appearance of the thighs. Liposuction and a thigh lift can be performed at the same time.
