How Is Breast Fat Transfer Performed?
During your initial consultation, Dr. Mendieta will discuss your options and develop a surgical plan that reflects your unique cosmetic goals and expectations. Breast fat transfer can be performed as a standalone procedure, or it can be combined with implants to hide implant edges and refine the shape of your breasts. This three-step procedure is accomplished in about two to three hours.
- Harvest: Fat is harvested from the selected donor sites using liposuction surgery. A small incision is created in the target area, and a thin cannula is inserted to remove unwanted fat cells carefully.
- Purification: The fat cells that are removed are then purified to eliminate contaminants that could potentially compromise the grafting process. The filtered fat is then placed in syringes for reinjection into the breasts.
- Transfer: A thin cannula is attached to the syringes, and the fat is meticulously injected into the breasts in thin layers until the desired augmentation is achieved.
What Procedures Can I Combine With My Natural Breast Enhancement?
When undergoing natural breast enhancement, patients may also choose additional surgeries.
Fat transfer to the breasts always involves liposuction but may also be combined with:
- Breast lift surgery
This is ideal for patients who want to reverse breast sagging. The procedure can also lift downward-pointing nipples and reduce stretched or enlarged areolas. When used in combination with fat-based breast enhancement, breast lift surgery provides tighter and firmer breasts. - Breast revision surgery
Women who choose to remove their implants permanently often find that their breasts are misshapen or lacking fullness in particular areas once the implants are gone. Fat transfer can restore fullness and a shapely appearance without implants. - Breast augmentation surgery
While breast fat transfer can be performed alone, it can also be done in combination with traditional breast augmentation with implants. What Is Recovery Like After My Natural Breast Augmentation?
After your breast fat transfer surgery, you should limit all physical activity, including intercourse and heavy lifting, for at least two weeks. Bruising and swelling may remain for up to three weeks after treatment. You should wear the necessary compression garments and sports bras for four weeks.
You may experience significant changes in breast size during the first few days and weeks. For this reason, you must wear a properly sized compression garment. The compression garment will help speed up your recovery and ensure beneficial results.
When Can I Exercise After My Fat Transfer?
You can slowly transition into your usual exercise routine two weeks after your procedure. Dr. Mendieta will give you a thorough recovery timeline during your breast fat transfer consultation.
When Will I See My Breast Fat Transfer Results?
It may take between three and six months to notice the final results of a breast fat transfer procedure. Newly transferred fat cells will graft to the existing breast fat to produce beautiful, subtly enhanced breast contours. Pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and aging may affect the appearance of the breasts over time.

How will breast fat transfer affect my future mammograms?

However, technological advancements in digital mammography have made it easier to distinguish between cancerous and non-cancerous lumps.

Does fat transfer to breasts last?
The final results may take three to six months to develop. After that point, the results of fat transfer to the breasts are permanent. The fat that survives the injection process will be fully integrated into the breast tissue. The fat will be a natural part of the breasts for the rest of the patient’s life. In cases of extreme weight gain or weight loss, the breasts may enlarge or shrink accordingly.

Does breast fat transfer hurt?
Patients will be under local or general anesthesia to prevent pain during the operation. Patients should experience little to no discomfort during the surgery.
Afterward, patients may experience minor to moderate pain and discomfort. These symptoms are usually temporary and may be addressed using prescription medications. Patients may experience a stretching or overly-full sensation in their enhanced breasts during the first three days. This is temporary and will pass as excess fat is absorbed.

How large will my breast be after fat transfer?
Because the body metabolizes between 50 and 70 percent of the injected fat, Dr. Mendieta will inject excess fat into the breasts to account for this loss. This can make the breasts appear oversized in the first few days after treatment.
Additionally, post-injection swelling can occur (especially if other surgical procedures are performed simultaneously). This can occur with any surgical procedure.
After recovery, patients can expect a modest increase in breast size. Usually, this amounts to no more than one cup size.

Will I have scarring following my breast fat transfer?
You may develop some nearly invisible scarring around your liposuction area if you choose to enhance your breasts using a breast fat transfer procedure. Patients who wish to combine breast fat transfer with implants can develop scars around the incision sites. Incisions are minuscule and generally placed in natural creases to hide their appearance. Any scarring that does form is likely to fade over time.
