Not only can excess eyelid skin be aesthetically displeasing and make it difficult to apply eye makeup; but severe eyelid sagging (or ptosis) can also obstruct a patient’s field of vision. Patients who desire an attractive and refreshed appearance can benefit from blepharoplasty; a facial surgical procedure that rejuvenates the eyes by removing excess eyelid skin and fat. Dr. Constantino Mendieta performs both upper and lower blepharoplasty to revitalize the eyelids and make the eyes appear brighter and larger.

The technique used during blepharoplasty depends on the extent of correction required and your anatomical needs. Upper and lower blepharoplasty may be performed at the same time, if necessary.
An incision is placed along the natural crease of the eyelids. Excess tissue can be removed through this incision, and fat can be manipulated to restore the eyelids to a more youthful aesthetic.
An incision is created along the lash line. To avoid a sunken appearance, Dr. Mendieta performs lower blepharoplasty by lifting the cheeks and repositioning the fat, resulting in a smoother and tighter surface.

During the first week following your surgery, you may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Applying a cold compress to the eyes can help minimize these side effects, and pain can be managed with oral medication as advised by Dr. Mendieta. It is recommended to sleep in an elevated position and avoid strenuous activities for at least two weeks.
Most patients can continue their usual exercise routine, including jogging and aerobics, three to four weeks following their blepharoplasty procedure.

It may take several weeks for the eyelids to adjust to their new shape and for all side effects to resolve. The results of blepharoplasty are intended to be long lasting, but the eyes are still susceptible to the natural aging process. If the eyebrows begin to droop, causing sagging of the upper eyelids, patients may want to consider undergoing brow lift surgery.

The total cost of blepharoplasty varies depending on several factors, such as the techniques used, surgical and anesthesia fees, geographical location, and desired extent of correction. Dr. Mendieta will provide you with an accurate cost estimate for your personalized procedure during your initial consultation.
It is uncommon for patients to experience significant complications following blepharoplasty.
Some of the potential risks may include:
Dr. Mendieta places all blepharoplasty incisions in inconspicuous areas of the eye so they are nearly imperceivable after recovery. Any scarring that develops is likely to go unnoticed and will fade over time.
