Dr. Constantino Mendieta Offers the Newest Facelift Procedures

Many facelift surgery patients are apprehensive about undergoing surgery because they are afraid of their results looking unnatural. The common misconception is people who have undergone facial surgery appear overdone or windblown. However, Dr. Mendieta incorporates the latest facelift techniques to ensure the most natural-looking outcome for all his patients.

Facelift surgery redefines the contours and angles of the aging face to restore a shapely and youthful appearance. However, there are non surgical face lift options available. Dr. Mendieta will assess your condition before developing an entirely customized facial rejuvenation plan that can revitalize and improve your appearance.

What Are the Benefits of Facelift Surgery?

Candidates for facelift surgery would like to address signs of aging in the mid face.

Facelift surgery can help patients who experience facial imperfections that include:

  • Skin laxity: The skin tends to become loose and thin after facial tissues lose collagen and elastin due to natural aging or sun damage.
  • Jowls: Drooping facial skin and fat collects around the jawline to form unflattering, facial shape-changing jowls.
  • Lack of jawline definition: In addition to jowls, many men and women experience the overall softening of the jawline.
  • Displaced facial fat: Fat from the cheeks can sag, creating unnatural fullness in unwanted areas. Additionally, the unflattering appearance of a double chin could arise when the neck tissues begin to sag or develop excess fat.
  • Nasolabial folds: The loss of volume and the dropping of the fat pad creates parentheses lines between the nose and mouth.
  • Marionette lines: Men and women develop the formation of lines between the mouth and jawline that cause a sad or angry appearance when the face is at rest.

What Is Discussed During My Facelift Surgery Consultation?

During the consultation process, every patient receives a surgical plan tailored to their facial anatomy and aesthetic expectations. For some patients, a surgical facelift may not be necessary, and non-surgical options may be sufficient. Patients who would like to explore correcting additional areas of the face, such as the brow or the neck area, may discuss the possibility of combining facial rejuvenation surgeries during their thorough consultation.

  • How Is Facelift Surgery Performed?

Facelift surgery can take between two and four hours and is performed using one of the following techniques.

    Facelift Techniques

A standard facelift technique is best suited for patients with both skin and muscle laxity that has resulted in an aged appearance. This traditional but well-refined technique makes incisions in the hairline and around the ears, allowing for scars to go unnoticed as they fade with time. The standard facelift addresses issues in the lower face and neck.

The mini facelift is designed for younger patients who have a general loosening of their face but no significant wrinkles. Incisions are placed around the ears and result in a minimal amount of scarring. This technique does not address the underlying muscular structures.

The mid facelift technique is performed on patients who are also undergoing a lower eyelid blepharoplasty. Through the lower eyelid incision, the malar fat pads are repositioned, and the mid face is lifted vertically, which helps soften the nasolabial lines. This technique can be combined with minimally invasive techniques, such as injectable fillers.

  • What Procedures Can Be Combined With Facelift Surgery?

Facelift surgery may be combined with other cosmetic procedures to produce optimal facial rejuvenation results. Combining surgical techniques is an excellent way to condense recovery time and save on costs. After consulting with a board-certified, experienced surgeon regarding your health and cosmetic goals, you may be a candidate for facelift surgery in combination with:

    Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is performed to address aging eyelids, such as upper eyelid hooding and lower eyelid puffiness. By combining an eyelid surgery with your facelift, you can ensure that there remains a harmonious balance between the upper and lower regions of the face.

    Brow Lift

While facelift surgery addresses the mid face and lower face, it does not address laxity or other signs of aging in the upper portion of the face. Brow lift surgery corrects fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead and elevates sagging or drooping eyebrows. This combination ensures harmony between the upper and lower face.

    Injectables

Injectable neuromodulators like BOTOX® Cosmetic temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and forehead (that is not addressed during a facelift. Dermal fillers, such as JUVÉDERM®, restore facial fullness to regions of the face, such as the cheeks, lips, temples, and nasolabial folds.

    Neck Lift

Neck lift surgery is almost always performed in combination with a facelift to address laxity beneath the jawline and chin. Neck lift surgery tighten sagging tissues and eliminates excess neck fat to restore smoothness and tautness to the neck.

What Are Your Concerns?

What Is Facelift Recovery Like?

After your surgery, you will feel groggy from the anesthesia and begin to experience mild discomfort as the numbing agents subside. It is important to arrange for someone to drive you home and take care of you during the first 24 to 28 hours. Surgical dressings may be applied to your incisions to reduce swelling and aid in the healing process.

Patients can expect mild bruising, swelling, and discomfort following their facelift surgery. Any pain can be managed with medication as prescribed by Dr. Mendieta. You should consider adding Exparel to your procedure to reduce the pain by up to 80% (during and after surgery). However, Exparel must be administered during the procedure.

Side effects will subside considerably during the first week of recovery, and you may feel ready to return to work to light activities by the end of the second week. These are general timelines, and you should follow your surgeon’s instructions to ensure your recovery process is smooth.

After a few months, your superficial tissues and underlying muscle tissues will show a significant difference in tightness and appearance as they fully adjust to the corrections made.

When Can I Exercise After a Facelift?

Physical activity and exercise should be limited for about two to three weeks after surgery. Patients should refrain from overstressing their facial muscles by avoiding any expressions or cardiovascular activities that would result in unnecessary blood flow to the face. Patients must refrain from strenuous activity and heavy lifting for three to six weeks.

What Will My Facelift Surgery Results Look Like?

The longevity of your facelift results depends on the surgical approach taken during your procedure (as well as your age, skin quality, genetics, and lifestyle choices). This procedure is designed to be long lasting, and you can preserve your results by adopting a healthy lifestyle and avoiding unprotected sun exposure.

It is important to note that a healthy lifestyle bolsters the lasting results of a facelift. Healthy nutrition, food habits, and regular exercise can significantly slow the effects of aging on your results. The loss of the skin’s quality can also be a result of environmental circumstances such as smoking, extensive sun exposure, drug and/or alcohol use, high stress, and genetic disposition.

What Are the Risks Associated With Facelift Surgery?

Patients typically do not experience significant complications following facelift surgery. However, all surgical procedures come with risks that may include:

  • Hematoma—Hematoma is the collection of blood outside of a blood vessel
  • Seroma—Seroma is the collection of fluid under the surface of your skin
  • Infection—Infection can occur at all incision sites
  • Scarring—Scarring may develop along the incision sites
  • Bleeding—Prolonged bleeding can occur after any surgical procedure
  • Necrosis—Fat necrosis is when the fat cells in the region start to die

Frequently Asked Questions About Facelift Surgery

  • How much does facelift surgery cost in Miami?

Many different factors affect the cost of each facelift procedure, such as the extent of correction required, surgical fees, geographical location, surgeon experience, and techniques used. You will be given an accurate price estimate tailored to your unique procedure during your initial consultation with Dr. Mendieta in Miami. There are some wonderful financing options available.

  • Will I have scarring after facelift surgery?

Dr. Mendieta places all facelift incisions in inconspicuous locations, such as within the hairline or along the natural contours around the ears. Any scarring that does develop is likely to fade over time as long as you follow all aftercare directions and avoid exposing your incisions to direct sunlight. Again, there are non surgical face lift procedures that are also available.

  • What types of anesthesia are available for my facelift surgery?

Patients may select either local or general anesthesia for their procedure. However, most patients opt for local anesthesia because it is safer and has little to no side effects. Dr. Mendieta works with a board-certified anesthesiologist for all surgeries to ensure total patient safety and comfort, regardless of the type of anesthesia used.

  • What is the best age for a facelift?

There is not an ideal age for a facelift as each person’s skin anatomy is different. It is recommended to undergo a facelift sooner rather than later when your skin is still elastic.

  • Does facelift surgery take a long time to perform?

Your facelift procedure could last from four to six hours, depending on the techniques performed and the procedures combined. While your time is valuable and important to us, we dedicate our strategy for performing the safest, most successful treatments possible.
