What is Lip Contouring?

Having plump, sensual, and defined lips is a desirable quality for many patients. Lip contouring is a non-surgical procedure that helps reshape and add definition to the lips. Dr. Constantino Mendieta has extensive training in facial analysis and rejuvenation, making him one of the few surgeons to incorporate traditional approaches with unique techniques to accentuate the lips. Using fat or dermal fillers, Dr. Mendieta can add volume to the lips and enhance their natural contours, producing beautiful and long-lasting results.

Ideal Candidates

The ideal candidates for lip contouring must be at least 18 years of age and desire youthful and shapely lips. During a thorough consultation, Dr. Mendieta evaluates his patients’ needs and develops the most appropriate approach to achieve their cosmetic objectives.

Patients may consider lip contouring if they can relate to any of the following:

  • Smoother, younger-looking lips
  • Improved lip definition
  • Plumper lips
  • Natural lip enhancement

What Procedures are Available for Lip Contouring?

  • Fat Transfer to Lips

The lip fat transfer is a three-step process that involves removing unwanted body fat and inserting it into the target area.

Liposuction is first performed to remove localized fat deposits. The fat is then purified to eliminate impurities and carefully injected into the lips to add the desired amount of correction. This approach delivers permanent lip contouring results in addition to body sculpting benefits.

  • Dermal Fillers for Lips

Dr. Mendieta can also help patients achieve a beautiful, kissable pout with dermal fillers. JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC and Restylane® are injectable fillers made of hyaluronic acid, which is a hydrating substance that is naturally created in the body. After applying a topical anesthetic, Dr. Mendieta strategically injects the product into the lips, sculpting their edges and adding fullness.

Addressing some concerns you may have.

Recovery

Minor bruising and swelling can be expected after lip contouring. These side effects should, however, dissipate after three days. If liposuction was performed, the donor area might be tender to the touch. Dr. Mendieta will recommend the most appropriate over-the-counter or prescription medication to alleviate any discomfort.

Exercise

If you opt for lip contouring using fat transfer, you will need to refrain from exercise for 7 to 10 days. Patients who chose dermal fillers for their lip contouring procedure can resume normal activities immediately after treatment.

Results

You should notice an immediate improvement in lip volume, shape, and definition after lip contouring. Swelling can obscure the final results for about one week, at which point it should resolve. Dermal fillers can last up to nine months, and fat transfer offers permanent results.

FAQ

  • How much does lip contouring cost?

The cost of a lip contouring procedure depends on the desired amount of product, the techniques used, and geographical location. Dr. Mendieta will calculate an accurate price estimate during your lip contouring consultation. But keep in mind that there are options available to finance your cosmetic treatments.

  • What are the risks associated with lip contouring?

Experiencing complications following lip contouring treatment is rare.

Some of the temporary side effects that may develop are:

    • Bleeding
    • Swelling
    • Bruising
  • Will I have scarring after lip contouring?

This procedure does not require creating large incisions, so there is no risk of scarring. Patients who choose lip contouring with fat transfer will have small incisions in the areas treated with liposuction, but these are unlikely to develop into visible scars.

  • What type of anesthesia is used during a lip contouring procedure?

A topical anesthetic is applied to the lips before lip contouring with dermal fillers. Those who undergo liposuction will be given either general or local anesthesia to ensure total comfort during the procedure.

For maximum safety, Dr. Mendieta works with a board-certified anesthesiologist regardless of which type of anesthesia is used.
