Am I a Candidate for Neck Liposuction?
Neck liposuction surgery is used to only remove fat deposits and reshape the neck. It is not a procedure to lift or tighten skin; or tissues in the neck. Ideal candidates for neck liposuction, or reshaping, are individuals with good skin elasticity without sagging skin who have fatty deposits in the neck area. Most candidates for neck liposuction will be younger, usually between 20-50 years of age. People with a double chin or a thicker neck due to submental fat (that are in good health) can benefit from neck liposuction. Patients should be able to adhere to restrictions before and after surgery, including quitting smoking and use of some medications like anti-inflammatories or blood thinners.

How Is Neck Reshaping Performed?
To remove fatty deposits on the neck and under the chin, the area will be numbed with local anesthesia. Small incisions are needed to insert the closed system cannulas. A fluid injection technique is injected into the area. And usually the ultra-assisted liposuction (UAL) technique is used to remove the fatty deposits and reshape the neck, jaw and chin.
Dr. Mendieta specializes in using specialized liposuction techniques that reduce swelling and bruising to improve the recovery process. The procedure usually takes less than an hour to perform, and patients can return home the same day.
How Long is Recovery from Neck Liposuction?
Assisted liposuction techniques used by Dr. Mendieta are less invasive and intrusive than traditional liposuction. This is good news for our patients undergoing neck liposuction or any liposuction procedures. There will likely be some swelling and bruising, but this should dissipate quickly, and most people can return to work in a few days after their procedure. Within a week, most activities can be resumed – strenuous activities or swimming should be avoided for at least two weeks.

Are neck liposuction and neck lift surgery similar?
While both procedures can improve the appearance of the neck, chin and jawline, they are different procedures. Neck liposuction only removes fatty deposits in the neck area, as it does not tighten or remove excess skin or reshape the muscles. The two procedures can be performed together if there are fat deposits that need to be removed before a neck lift is completed to remove excess skin and tighten the neck tissue.

Will neck or under-the-chin fat return after liposuction?
Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from the desired area. These cells will no longer exist under the chin or on the neck, so they will not return. However, if a patient gains weight, other fat cells in the body can become larger.

Will I have scars after neck reshaping surgery?
There are tiny incisions made to accommodate the cannulas for liposuction. These incisions are only about 2mm in width and are located under the chin where they are hard to see. If you follow post-care instructions from our team, the scars should be nearly invisible once they heal completely.
