What is Rhinoplasty Surgery?

The nose is an important facial feature that contributes to both facial balance and aesthetic appeal. Rhinoplasty is designed to improve a patient’s appearance and restore facial harmony by correcting cosmetic nasal imperfections. The nose is a unique and complex structure, so it is essential to select a plastic surgeon with considerable experience and a thorough understanding of facial anatomy. Dr. Mendieta’s comprehensive training in facial enhancement surgery has equipped him with the skills necessary to produce outstanding rhinoplasty results that complement the contours of the face.

Rhinoplasty Procedure Options

Rhinoplasty is performed under intravenous (IV) sedation or general anesthesia.  It can take one to four hours to complete, depending on the complexity of the procedure. Patients with multiple facial concerns may be able to combine rhinoplasty with other surgeries, such as eyelid surgery and chin augmentation. Dr. Mendieta offers two approaches to nose surgery: open and closed rhinoplasty.

  • Open Rhinoplasty

With an Open Rhinoplasty procedure, a small incision is created on the outside of the nose, hidden in the natural contours of the columella. This technique provides optimal visualization of the surgical site, allowing your surgeon to deliver more extensive correction.

  • Closed Rhinoplasty

With a Closed Rhinoplasty procedure, all incisions are created inside the nose, ensuring that there are no visible scars. Patients who wish to correct minimal issues in the tip of their nose can benefit from this rhinoplasty technique.

Rhinoplasty Recovery Time

The length of recovery after rhinoplasty is different for every patient. Patients can expect some discomfort, congestion, bruising, and swelling during the first few weeks of recovery. One week after surgery, any internal and external splints are removed. Side effects should subside considerably within two weeks, at which point most patients return to work and social activities. Out-of-town patients should plan to stay in the area for up to 10 days before traveling home to allow enough time for a follow-up with Dr. Mendieta.

Exercise

Exercise and weight lifting should be avoided for at least one month after rhinoplasty, as these activities increase the risk of postoperative complications.

Rhinoplasty Results Timeline

It can take up to one year to heal completely and see the final results of your rhinoplasty procedure. The natural aging process often causes the skin to thicken gradually, so your nose may appear slightly different over time. Rhinoplasty is intended to provide permanent results, as long as you follow all aftercare instructions while your nose adjusts to its new form.
