A Miami Plastic Surgeon’s Journey From Reconstruction to Facial Rejuvenation, Body Contouring, and BBL Surgery
Plastic surgery has never been just a career for me. It has been a lifelong pursuit of understanding the human body, developing surgical skill, learning from other surgeons, teaching what I have learned, and continually searching for ways to improve.
For more than 25 years, I have practiced plastic surgery in Miami, building my experience through training, studying, and teaching in different parts of the United States and around the world. Throughout my career, I have focused extensively on facial rejuvenation, breast surgery, body contouring, fat grafting, and Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery. I have also had the privilege of teaching plastic surgeons nationally and internationally.
Today, I continue to evolve as a surgeon. While my career has become closely associated with advanced body contouring and BBL surgery, my passion extends across the full spectrum of aesthetic plastic surgery. In recent years, I have increasingly focused on facial rejuvenation and facelift surgery, guided by the belief that becoming a better surgeon never ends.
That philosophy has guided my entire career.
Where My Passion for Plastic Surgery Began
My interest in plastic surgery began when I was very young.
I was born in Los Angeles but spent part of my childhood in Nicaragua. My uncle was a plastic surgeon, and as a child, I had the opportunity to watch him treat people who had suffered devastating injuries, including burns, facial trauma, and other disfiguring injuries.
What struck me was not simply the technical ability required to reconstruct the human body.
I also saw how surgery could give someone something much deeper: hope, dignity, and confidence.
I remember being fascinated by the ability to take something that had been damaged and help restore it. I was only about five to seven years old, but I knew that I wanted to work with the human body and eventually become a plastic surgeon.
That early experience shaped the way I have viewed plastic surgery ever since.
Plastic surgery is technical, but it is also deeply human.
Learning From Surgeons Around the World
My education in plastic surgery did not stop with traditional training.
Throughout my career, I have actively sought opportunities to learn from surgeons with different philosophies, techniques, and approaches. My training and professional experiences have included the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and additional study and exposure in Paris, Brazil, and other leading centers in aesthetic surgery.
Traveling internationally changed the way I think about surgery. I would sometimes encounter surgeons in one part of the world who strongly discouraged a particular technique, only to travel somewhere else and see highly respected surgeons using that same technique successfully.
That experience taught me an important lesson: Never stop learning, and never become so certain that you stop listening.
The best surgeons I have encountered were not necessarily the ones who believed they knew everything. They were the ones who remained curious.
Every surgeon has something to teach you.
From Performing Surgery to Teaching Surgery
One of the most meaningful parts of my career has been teaching.
I have had the opportunity to share my experience with plastic surgeons around the world,
particularly in areas of body contouring, gluteal surgery, and aesthetic surgery. My academic and teaching involvement has included presentations, courses, surgical education, and participation in major plastic- surgery educational programs.
Teaching has also made me a better surgeon.
When you perform a technique repeatedly, some aspects of surgery become almost instinctive. You know how you want to hold an instrument. You know how you want to approach an area of anatomy. You begin to recognize what you are seeing almost automatically.
But when another surgeon asks you, “Why do you do it that way?” you have to stop and think. You have to analyze your own technique.
“Why am I holding the instrument this way?”
“Why am I approaching the tissue from this direction?”
“What am I seeing that tells me to make this adjustment?”
“What anatomical relationship am I trying to change?”
Teaching forces you to examine what you do instinctively. And that process has made me better.
Why I Believe Surgeons Should Share Their Knowledge
Early in my career, I understood that surgeons could be protective of their techniques.
I have always taken a different approach. I believe medicine advances because people share knowledge.
If every surgeon kept every idea, technique, and lesson to themselves, the specialty would never progress.
Teaching another surgeon does not diminish what you know. It challenges you to understand it better.
When you teach, you have to prepare. You have to review your results, examine your successes and your complications, and understand why something worked and why something didn’t.
And when another surgeon takes what you taught them and improves upon it, that challenges you to improve again.
That cycle of teaching and learning is one of the things I value most about plastic surgery.
My Experience With BBL and Body Contouring
Much of my professional career has become associated with body contouring and Brazilian Butt Lift surgery. The BBL has become one of the most recognized procedures in aesthetic plastic surgery, but the operation is about much more than adding volume to the buttocks.
Successful body contouring requires an understanding of the entire silhouette.
The abdomen, waist, hips, back, thighs, and buttocks all influence one another. The goal is not simply to make one part of the body larger or smaller. The goal is to create proportion and harmony.
My experience with gluteal surgery has included years of studying, performing, and teaching techniques related to gluteal anatomy, fat grafting, body contouring, and aesthetic analysis. My professional record includes publications and presentations involving gluteal evaluation and BBL safety, as well as participation in national and international educational programs.
That experience remains an important part of my identity as a plastic surgeon. But it is not the entirety of who I am as a surgeon.
Continuing to Evolve: My Increasing Focus on Facial Rejuvenation
One of the things I have learned after more than two decades in plastic surgery is that you should never allow your past success to limit your future.
My career has given me extensive experience in body contouring and BBL surgery, but I have always loved the broader field of plastic surgery. Over the past several years, I have become increasingly focused on facial rejuvenation, including facelift surgery.
The face presents an entirely different surgical challenge from the body.
Facial rejuvenation requires an understanding of anatomy, aging, proportion, skin quality, tissue movement and, perhaps most importantly, restraint.
A facelift should not make someone look like they have had a facelift. It should make them look refreshed, natural, and more like themselves.
That philosophy has become increasingly important to me as I continue to develop my approach to facial rejuvenation.
I don’t see this as leaving behind the work that made me known for body contouring. I see it as the natural evolution of my career.
Why Experience Matters in Plastic Surgery
Experience is not simply the number of years a surgeon has been practicing.
Experience means seeing enough different patients to understand that no two bodies or faces are exactly alike.
It means encountering straightforward cases and complicated ones.
It means learning what works, recognizing what does not, understanding how tissues behave over time, and knowing when a particular procedure—or a particular technique—is not appropriate for a patient.
One principle that has stayed with me throughout my career is that there is no single technique that is right for every patient. Plastic surgery should be individualized.
The patient’s anatomy, goals, proportions, lifestyle, previous procedures, and expectations all matter.
The operation should be designed around the patient—not the other way around.
Plastic Surgery as Art and Science
I have always viewed plastic surgery as a combination of science and artistry.
The science is anatomy.
It is a surgical technique.
It is understanding tissue, healing, blood supply, biomechanics, and safety.
The art is understanding proportion.
It is seeing what can be improved without destroying what already works.
It is recognizing that the most beautiful result is not necessarily the most dramatic result.
Whether I am performing a facelift, body contouring procedure, breast surgery, or BBL, I am ultimately trying to create harmony.
The goal is not to make every patient look the same. It’s to understand what makes that individual unique and use surgery to enhance it.
What I Have Learned From More Than 25 Years in Plastic Surgery
If I could go back and give my younger self a few pieces of advice, they would be simple.
Never stop learning.
The moment you believe you have mastered everything is the moment you stop improving.
Stay humble.
There is always someone who knows something you don’t.
Listen to your patients.
Patients often know what they want to change, even when they don’t know how to describe the surgical solution.
Don’t chase trends.
Plastic surgery changes constantly. Techniques change. Technology changes. Patient preferences change. A surgeon has to evolve without losing sight of sound surgical principles.
Teach.
Teaching forces you to understand your own work at a deeper level.
Never forget the person behind the procedure.
Every patient who sits across from me has a story.
That story matters.
My Philosophy Today
After more than 25 years in plastic surgery, I don’t believe that a surgeon ever truly reaches the finish line.
There is always something new to learn. There is always another technique to study. There is always another patient who teaches you something. And there is always another opportunity to become better.
My career began with an early fascination with reconstructing the human body. It developed through years of training, international learning, body-contouring surgery, BBL surgery, and teaching.
Today, it continues to evolve through my work in facial rejuvenation, facelift surgery, and the many other areas of plastic surgery that I have always enjoyed.
The procedures, technology, and techniques may change, but my fundamental philosophy has remained the same:
Learn. Improve. Share what you know. Listen to your patients. And never stop trying to become a better surgeon.
For me, that is what plastic surgery is about.
It is not simply changing how someone looks. It is about understanding the individual, respecting their anatomy, and setting realistic goals. Through experience, precision, and artistry, my goal is to help them feel more confident in who they are.
That is the journey I have been on for more than 25 years. And it continues today in Miami.
