Arm Lift in Miami, FL

Taut and Toned

Saggy skin or tissue under the upper arms can result from skin stretching after weight loss or as part of the aging process. These “bat wings” can be embarrassing, and many people try to hide their flabby arms under longer sleeves or loose clothing.

Brachioplasty, or arm lift plastic surgery, is a body contouring procedure that can remove excess skin and tighten the upper arms for a more attractive, toned appearance. Dr. Mendieta at 4Beauty by Mendieta and our team of expert body contouring surgeons can reshape and tighten the upper arms through brachioplasty at our Miami, FL, facility.

What Is an Arm Lift?

An arm lift is a body contouring procedure designed to enhance the appearance of the upper arm by reshaping underlying tissue and removing excess fat and loose skin. This procedure is ideal for patients with laxity throughout the upper arm who might complain of a “flabby” appearance in the area. This procedure is commonly performed alongside other body contouring procedures after massive weight loss or as a result of weight loss from GLP-1s.

Benefits of an Arm Lift

The skin on the upper arms can stretch with weight gain and loss of collagen with age, resulting in looser, sagging skin. If you have drooping skin or tissue under the upper arms, exercise and diet alone are usually not effective in tightening the skin. An arm lift addresses these concerns, revealing toned, tightened arms that reflect slender musculature.

Other benefits of an arm lift include:

  • Improved aesthetic appearance
  • Enhanced mobility by removing loose skin and tissue
  • More clothing choices
  • Improved confidence

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for an Arm Lift?

Good candidates for brachioplasty have excess skin on the upper arms that is affecting their appearance, comfort, or self-confidence. Some patients might be experiencing a loss of elasticity due to aging or have loose skin and tissue due to rapid weight loss.

Ideal arm lift candidates:

  • Have loose, hanging skin and tissue on the upper arms
  • Want a more toned, muscular arm appearance
  • Want more clothing options, such as tank tops and T-shirts
  • May have some excess fat pockets in the arms
  • Have reasonable expectations for results

What Are My Arm Lift Options?

Working with one of our experienced plastic surgeons, you will receive a unique surgical plan tailored to your needs and goals. The following procedures are often performed alongside an arm lift to achieve more extensive skin revision and enhanced body contouring.

Liposuction

Some arm lift patients benefit from a combined liposuction procedure, during which the surgeon uses a thin cannula to gently remove stubborn pockets of fat from the upper arms. This is paired with the ideal arm lifting technique for a comprehensive result. Liposuction can also be used on other areas of the body, like the back, to create a more seamless result and further improve your arm lift results.

Body Contouring Procedures

If you are experiencing loose skin, sagging tissue, and a loss of skin elasticity after major weight loss, you’re not alone. Rapid weight loss often comes with the challenge of loose skin that can only be remedied with surgery. Dr. Mendieta designed his body contouring surgery package to provide a comprehensive and custom approach for patients experiencing these issues. From tummy tucks to thigh lifts, this collection of procedures aims to contour the body, tissues, and skin for a more pleasing, shapely result.

Body Lift

Losing weight is often great for your health and self-confidence, but if you’re left with loose skin and stretched abdominal muscles, it can be quite discouraging—and difficult to enjoy your results.

A body lift is an advanced body contouring procedure that removes excess skin from the circumference of the midsection, back, and thighs, and it also lifts the lower extremities for a contoured result.

Preparing for Your Arm Lift

Most patients want to know how they can best prepare for their arm lift procedure, which is an excellent way to improve their experience and ensure a smooth process.

Your expert body contouring surgeon will discuss what you need to take care of before surgery, which may include:

  • Undergoing the necessary medical testing and diagnostics
  • Stopping or pausing certain medications that can affect healing and surgery
  • Quitting smoking
  • Maintaining a stable weight

You may also need to prepare for the recovery process by taking a few weeks off work, setting up any child or pet care, and enlisting a friend or family member to help you get home after surgery and stay with you for at least the first night.

What to Expect During Arm Lift Surgery

Arm Lift Consultation

The first step toward toned, contoured arms is a consultation with your experienced body contouring surgeon at 4Beauty by Mendieta. During this meeting, you’ll be able to discuss your goals for the procedure, including whether you’re combining procedures. Your surgeon will ask you questions about your medical history, examine your arms, and show you before and after images to give you an idea of what type of results are possible. They will also discuss potential surgical steps and go over the recovery requirements with you.

If you and your surgeon decide that an arm lift is right for you, they will create a customized surgical plan that details what steps they plan to take during your procedure. This will include other procedures, such as liposuction, if indicated. Lastly, they will provide you with an accurate cost estimate.

Arm Lift Procedure

Brachioplasty surgery (or arm lift plastic surgery) is performed under sedation. Your surgeon will discuss the types of anesthesia used before your surgery. To remove the excess skin and tissue, an incision is made on the underside of the upper arm. There are various techniques to hide the incision and scar, and the incision size depends on the extent of sagging in the skin and underlying tissue. Some arm lift procedures will require liposuction to remove fatty tissue and the removal of excess skin.

Your surgeon will use their expertise to minimize the incision and scar in size and appearance while creating a tighter, more youthful upper arm. Through the incision, they will tighten loosened tissue, creating a more sculpted contour. Lastly, they will remove excess skin and carefully close the incisions.

The procedure only takes about two to three hours, and most patients go home the same day, after a short recovery period at our facility in Miami.

Arm Lift Recovery & Aftercare

After arm lift surgery, the arms are wrapped in bandages and compression garments. The compression garments help reduce swelling and assist the skin and underlying tissue in reshaping as the arm heals. Some patients may have a drain inserted to release excess fluids from the surgical site.

In the following days after surgery, patients usually have mild to moderate pain, which can be controlled with prescribed pain medications. EXPAREL® is also an option for reducing pain during surgical procedures, but it will be an additional cost. Dr. Mendieta can recommend topical applications to reduce the appearance of scars while healing.

Most patients are able to return to work or most normal activities a week after arm lift surgery. You may need to wear compression garments to improve the healing process, even after the bandages are removed. Exercise and strenuous activities are restricted for four weeks after surgery, but most activities can be resumed after one month.

What Results Can I Expect From an Arm Lift?

Your arms will experience swelling after surgery, but this will dissipate drastically over the first four weeks. The change in the contours and firmness of the arms is immediate but obscured by swelling. The appearance of the arms will continue to change as the arms heal and the skin firms over the following months.

As you heal, you’ll notice the slimmed and contoured shape of your arms, with reduced loose skin for a more youthful, sculpted result. Soon enough, you’ll be on the beach showing off your toned arms!

Arm Lift FAQs

What do arm lift scars look like?

There are incisions needed for brachioplasty surgery, but Dr. Mendieta will hide them as much as possible, as they run vertically on the underside of the arms. Scars can be minimized with topical creams or silicone sheets; once your incisions have healed, about three weeks after surgery, you can begin using these products to lighten your scars.

Be sure to keep your incisions and scars well-protected from sun damage by using a strong SPF every day. Lastly, follow all instructions for exercise and mobility, as applying tension to your scars or healing incisions can increase their size.

When can I work out after my arm lift?

It’s important to follow your recovery instructions as best you can, especially when it comes to exercise. You can return to some activities after four weeks, if cleared by your surgeon, but nothing that engages the arms. Activities like yoga, pilates, or weight training should be avoided until your surgeon approves them, usually at least six weeks after surgery.

What are the risks of arm lift surgery?

All surgery carries some risk. While rare, potential risks of an arm lift include:

  • Unfavorable scarring
  • Nerve damage
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Excess bleeding
